Family Assistant

to Private Family

Job ID: 9993872

About The Job

We are seeking a full-time Family Assistant for a warm, welcoming family in McLean with three daughters (5th grade, 6th grade, and entering high school). The family has worked with nannies and an au pair in the past and is now ready for a more experienced, higher-level partner to support them in managing their home and family life.

This fall, the oldest daughter will begin at a different school than her sisters, adding a new layer of coordination to school runs, activities, and calendars. The girls are active and social, involved in a variety of sports throughout the year, and the family is looking for someone with warmth and a great personality who will love spending time with them.

Day to day, this role centers on school/activity transport, helping prepare meals, keeping the home tidy and organized, and handling errands and personal support.

Schedule

This is a full-time role with core coverage between 1pm and 7/8pm, Monday through Friday. Beyond that core window, the family is open to shaping the schedule around the right candidate. For candidates that live close by, being open to some morning school drop-offs during the schoolyear would be a big plus.

During the summer, the core coverage will shift toward daytime hours (e.g. 8am to mid-afternoon). The exact schedule will flex throughout the year, depending on the girls’ activities, travel plans, and the family needs.

The Employer

The parents are kind, down-to-earth people who are easy to be around and quick to make anyone feel at home. Dad works in finance and is approachable, respectful, and family-oriented. Mom is a schoolteacher and brings a warm, funny, and positive energy to the household. Together, they are raising grounded kids with strong family values and are looking for someone who shares that same sensibility.

The family travels regularly and splits time between their home in McLean and a lake house they visit throughout the year and frequently over the summer.

  • Providing coverage during school closures or holidays

  • Tidying and resetting of shared spaces
  • Maintaining cleanliness between housekeeping visits by wiping counters, emptying the dishwasher and other routine home upkeep tasks
  • Inventory, restock and organize grocery and household items (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco)
  • Organizing closets, playrooms, and frequently used spaces
  • Establishing and maintaining practical household systems for clothing, toys, sports equipment, pantry items, laundry, and other frequently used belongings
  • Managing household laundry (linens, towels, etc.). Manage and assist children with their laundry (wash, fold, organize).

  • A reliable, safe driver who has experience driving children
  • Lives locally to McLean, VA
  • Non-smoker
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Spanish speaking is a plus (children are learning Spanish)

About You

You take ownership and can look around a room and know what needs to be done. You’re resourceful and have a knack for all kinds of things — whether that’s managing a busy calendar, pulling together a meal, or figuring out a fix on the fly. You build rapport quickly with children and have a way of earning their respect. Your communication style is transparent and direct (the family would always rather hear the truth than a version of the day that’s been smoothed over). Above all, you’re respectful, grounded, and see yourself as a partner with the parents.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $85,000-100,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Annual bonus
  • Health insurance stipend
  • Generous vacation time, plus sick days and holidays

Woman Looking Around As The World Moves Quickly Around Her

The world is spinning faster every day.

Employment has changed drastically the past few years—how we work, the type of work we do, and even where we work. Yet, while the world adapts, solutions for hiring private staff seem to be stuck in the past.

At Old State Staffing, we believe the status quo is not enough, and that those who decide now is the time to settle will be left behind. In the face of great change, tinkering around the edges simply won’t do. Since Day 1, our approach has been built on four key principles:

1. Developing A Quality Product

We’ve built Old State Staffing from the ground up, implementing the same cutting-edge recruiting tools used by the nation’s largest family offices. Historically inaccessible to smaller clients, these tools improve the tracking and management of talent, utilize machine learning for smarter searches, and intuitively compare compensation and qualification benchmarks both regionally and nationally. This allows us to find and match families with the best candidates quicker and more efficiently than ever before.

2. Building A Great Team

We knew from the start that our team would be our greatest differentiator. That’s because our agency is composed entirely of family office professionals who know what exceptional candidates look like; because we’ve applied to, managed, and hired for each of those positions ourselves.

3. Creating Meaningful Relationships

Building and maintaining relationships is important today, more than ever before. We place immense value on our relationships, not just with our clients, but our candidates, and the community at large. We spent our “pandemic years” building partnerships with local universities, to open the doors of private staffing to recent college graduates in the most educated metropolitan area in the world.

4. Refusing To Settle

Change is inevitable, yet private staffing has historically lagged in both hiring and employment standards. We’ve always been disruptors, first to adopt AI and machine learning—ensuring smarter, faster, more accurate matches for our clients.

We know that choosing an agency is a personal decision, and we’re honored for the time you have spent considering us as a partner in your search. If you haven’t spoken to us yet, let me be the first to say that we can’t wait to introduce you to our contacts, to guide you through the hiring process, and to introduce you to the perfect candidate. We know the stakes are high, but so are the rewards. With Old State Staffing you’ll be empowered to make informed, meaningful hiring decisions, so you can continue to thrive in a world that’s spinning faster every day.
