Babynurse

A caregiver with expertise in caring for newborns/infants and also for providing in-home guidance and support to new parents.

The Role of a Newborn Care Specialist

A Newborn Care Specialist is an infant-care specialist that provides expert care to one or more infants, often with a pre-planned departure when the child reaches a specific age.

A Newborn Care Specialist can be thought of as a daily, in-home caregiver to a newborn and their parents. This role is primarily responsible for ensuring that a newborn’s daily needs are met, with secondary responsibility for supporting new parents as they adapt to their new routine.

A Newborn Care Specialist’s duties include providing personal care/hygiene, feeding, burping, changing and soothing the newborn, establishing and maintaining a healthy sleep routine and schedule, monitoring and tracking the newborn’s growth and development, communicating regularly with the parents and reporting any issues or concerns, providing emotional support and companionship, assisting with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, managing other care providers, shopping for groceries and personal items and taking care of household and personal matters as they arise.

A successful Newborn Care Specialist will have strong communication, a high level of empathy, competence and trustworthiness, and will ultimately enable the family to maintain balance in their personal and professional lives.

Job Description

A Newborn Care Specialist will either have completed their secondary education, and may or may not possess a Bachelor’s (B.S. or B.A.) degree.

An experienced Newborn Care Specialist will have 3-5 years’ experience in child care, education or family assistance in a household, school or childcare facility setting. Depending on the specific needs of a family, experience in a specific area may also be required, such as personal service, management of other childcare staff, preparing food, etc.

Note: A Newborn Care Specialist does not necessarily need prior experience in this role. In fact, many of the best Newborn Care Specialists come from other caregiving positions, like a Companion, Family Assistant or primary caregiver. Similarly, because this role deals more with general (compared to specific) experience, recent graduates or those who are at the beginning (or a transition stage) of their career often make an exceptional Newborn Care Specialist.

  • Should be knowledgeable and up-to-date on best practices and guidelines for infant-care, such as sleep, eating, hygiene, etc. and able to ensure the safety and well-being of the newborn at all times
  • Ability to adapt to the changing needs and situations of the child/family and cope with unexpected challenges such as developmental changes, behavioral issues, etc. and modify their care accordingly
  • Willingness to do light housekeeping or organizing within the home, preparing meals, or other daily/weekly duties as necessary
  • May be required to possess certain skills, like a second language, experience with childhood education, caring for individuals with developmental or physical disabilities, etc.
  • Newborn Care Specialists should be calm and collected, friendly and outgoing, imaginative and creative, patient and understanding, warm, loving and kind
  • Willingness to do light housekeeping or organizing within the home, preparing meals, pet care or other daily/weekly duties as necessary
  • Familiarity with technology, including household systems (smart home devices/interfaces, HVAC, security, etc.)

First aid and CPR are strongly encouraged in this role. Other professional certifications/licenses are not required, but an employer may prefer candidates who have certain educational backgrounds or other skills such as technology proficiency, fluency in a language other than English, etc.

Responsibilities for a Newborn Care Specialist vary depending on the parents’ expectations as well as the number of children being cared for in this role. Common duties include:

Travel/miscellaneous expenses

Employers are responsible for expenses incurred when travelling for work or while transporting children. Woman Looking Around As The World Moves Quickly Around Her

The world is spinning faster every day.

Employment has changed drastically the past few years—how we work, the type of work we do, and even where we work. Yet, while the world adapts, solutions for hiring private staff seem to be stuck in the past.

At Old State Staffing, we believe the status quo is not enough, and that those who decide now is the time to settle will be left behind. In the face of great change, tinkering around the edges simply won’t do. Since Day 1, our approach has been built on four key principles:

1. Developing A Quality Product

We’ve built Old State Staffing from the ground up, implementing the same cutting-edge recruiting tools used by the nation’s largest family offices. Historically inaccessible to smaller clients, these tools improve the tracking and management of talent, utilize machine learning for smarter searches, and intuitively compare compensation and qualification benchmarks both regionally and nationally. This allows us to find and match families with the best candidates quicker and more efficiently than ever before.

2. Building A Great Team

We knew from the start that our team would be our greatest differentiator. That’s because our agency is composed entirely of family office professionals who know what exceptional candidates look like; because we’ve applied to, managed, and hired for each of those positions ourselves.

3. Creating Meaningful Relationships

Building and maintaining relationships is important today, more than ever before. We place immense value on our relationships, not just with our clients, but our candidates, and the community at large. We spent our “pandemic years” building partnerships with local universities, to open the doors of private staffing to recent college graduates in the most educated metropolitan area in the world.

4. Refusing To Settle

Change is inevitable, yet private staffing has historically lagged in both hiring and employment standards. We’ve always been disruptors, first to adopt AI and machine learning—ensuring smarter, faster, more accurate matches for our clients.

We know that choosing an agency is a personal decision, and we’re honored for the time you have spent considering us as a partner in your search. If you haven’t spoken to us yet, let me be the first to say that we can’t wait to introduce you to our contacts, to guide you through the hiring process, and to introduce you to the perfect candidate. We know the stakes are high, but so are the rewards. With Old State Staffing you’ll be empowered to make informed, meaningful hiring decisions, so you can continue to thrive in a world that’s spinning faster every day.
